What is Savlon Cream used for?
Savlon Cream is used for the cleansing and prevention of skin infections in first aid (minor burns, small wounds, insect bites and stings) and minor skin problems (including blisters & sores, chapped skin, nappy rash, spots, blackheads and sunburn).
What if I accidentally swallow some of the Savlon Cream?
If you or a child accidentally swallow some of this cream, you should contact your doctor or local accident and emergency department immediately.
Is there any reason I should stop using Savlon Cream?
You should stop using this cream if you experience irritation or other unwanted effects, such as the side effects mentioned above.
Directions
You should always use Savlon Cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. If you are unsure, check with them.
To apply Savlon Cream:
- Wash hands thoroughly before and after the application
- Clean the affected area with clean water and pat dry.
- Gently apply the cream to the wound using your fingers or gauze.
- For cuts and small wounds, protect the affected area with a plaster or non-adherent dressing. Burns and scalds are best left uncovered.
- Repeat the process if required.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Savlon Cream can cause side-effects, although not everybody gets them. If you experience any of the following side effects, stop using the cream and seek medical advice:
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of the face, tongue or throat
- dizziness
- skin irritation or rash
If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any side effects not mentioned in the leaflet. You can also report any side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Ingredients
The active substances are Cetrimide 0.5%w/w, Chlorhexidine Digluconate 0.1% w/w.
The other ingredients are cetostearyl alcohol, liquid paraffin, methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl hydroxybenzoate (E216), disodium edetate, perfume (including limonene, linalool, benzyl benzoate, citral) & purified water.
Warnings
You should not use Savlon Cream if you are allergic to chlorhexidine as it may cause allergic reactions.
