Phorpain Ibuprofen Gel 5%

Overview

Phorpain Gel contains ibuprofen and belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medicines reduce pain and inflammation and bring down a high temperature.

Phorpain Gel is used to treat a number of painful conditions affecting the joints and muscles, such as backache, rheumatic and muscular pain, sprains, strains and sports injuries. It is also used to treat pain from non-serious arthritic conditions and nerve pain (neuralgia).

Directions

The recommended dose in adults and adolescents (aged 12 years and above) is to squeeze 4 to 10cm of gel from the tube on the affected area and massage it until absorbed. It should not be repeated more frequently than every four hours and no more than four times a day in a 24-hour period.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Phorpain Ibuprofen Gel 5% can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. It can cause allergic reactions, although serious allergic reactions are rare. Other side effects include abdominal pain and indigestion.

How it works

Phorpain Ibuprofen Gel 5% is a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes locally in tissues. When applied to skin, ibuprofen penetrates to underlying muscles and joints, reducing production of prostaglandins – inflammatory mediators that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation.

This localised action provides targeted relief for muscle strains, joint pain, and soft tissue injuries while minimizing systemic side effects compared to oral NSAIDs. The gel formulation allows controlled absorption through the skin, providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects directly at the affected area.

Ingredients

The active substance is ibuprofen. The other ingredients are hydroxyethylcellulose, sodium hydroxide, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, purified water.

Warnings

You should not use this medication if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are allergic to ibuprofen or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are allergic to aspirin or similar medicines.
• if you are asthmatic or suffer from rhinitis (allergic runny nose) or urticaria (hives).
• on broken, damaged, infected or diseased skin.
• if you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
