What is Cystopurin?

Cystopurin is a medicine used to relieve the symptoms of mild cystitis. Its active ingredient is potassium citrate, which makes your urine less acidic and helps to ease the discomfort caused by acidic urine.

It comes as granules in single-dose sachets, which you dissolve in water and drink.

Can you take Cystopurin with paracetamol?

Yes, you can take paracetamol with Cystopurin, as it isn’t listed as a medicine that interacts with it. The NHS says you can take paracetamol up to 4 times a day to reduce pain when you have a urinary tract infection, so follow the directions on the paracetamol pack.

If you take any other medicines, tell your prescriber or pharmacist before you start Cystopurin.

Can you take Cystopurin when pregnant?

No, you shouldn’t take Cystopurin if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your prescriber has advised you to. If you think you have cystitis or a urinary tract infection while you’re pregnant, ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 rather than treating it yourself.

Can you take Cystopurin with antibiotics?

It depends on the antibiotic, so speak to your prescriber or pharmacist before taking Cystopurin with one. Cystopurin makes your urine less acidic, which can make the antibiotics nitrofurantoin and methenamine work less well.

Can you take Cystopurin with ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen isn’t listed as a medicine that interacts with Cystopurin, but for pain with a urinary tract infection the NHS suggests paracetamol. If you’d like to use ibuprofen, check with your prescriber or pharmacist first, especially if you have heart or kidney problems or take other medicines.
