Aluminium chloride is a strong antiperspirant used to treat excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. It works by forming temporary plugs in the sweat ducts, reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. This can help manage sweating in areas such as the underarms, hands and feet. Aluminium chloride is often recommended when regular antiperspirants are not effective enough.
Aluminium chloride can cause stinging, itching, redness or irritation, particularly when applied to damp or recently shaved skin. Moisture can react with aluminium chloride to produce hydrochloric acid, which may irritate the skin. To reduce the risk, apply it to completely dry, unbroken skin and follow the medication instructions. If irritation becomes severe, persistent or painful, stop using the product and seek advice from a pharmacist or healthcare professional.
It is usually applied at night to completely dry skin, allowing it to work while sweating is reduced. Initially, it may be used nightly for several days, depending on the product instructions and severity of sweating. Once symptoms are controlled, applications can often be reduced to once or twice a week, or as needed.
Always follow the directions for your specific aluminium chloride treatment and avoid applying it more frequently than recommended.
