Weight loss injections are prescription medications administered by injection that help people lose weight by affecting appetite and blood sugar levels. The main types include tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy), which are GLP-1 receptor agonists that mimic hormones naturally produced in the body to regulate appetite and slow digestion.
Weight loss injections work by mimicking hormones in your body that control appetite and blood sugar. They slow down the rate at which food leaves your stomach, making you feel fuller for longer periods. This naturally reduces your calorie intake and helps with weight loss. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) works on both GLP-1 and GIP hormones, while semaglutide (Wegovy) primarily targets GLP-1 receptors.
The NHS currently approves two main weight loss injections: semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). Both medications are available through specialist weight management services, and Mounjaro has began being made available through some GP practices for eligible patients.
