Yes, Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice is non-toxic and does not contain traditional pesticides, making it suitable for most people with asthma or sensitive skin. However, if you experience any irritation, you should stop use and consult a healthcare professional. For more details on managing head lice safely with skin conditions, visit the NHS advice page on head lice and nits.
Does Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice kill lice eggs as well as live lice?
Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice works by physically coating and suffocating lice, including some eggs. However, a repeat application is often recommended after 7 days to ensure any newly hatched lice are treated.
Can I use Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice on coloured or chemically treated hair?
Yes, Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice is safe to use on dyed, permed, or chemically treated hair. It does not contain ingredients that interfere with hair colour or treatments.
How long should I leave Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice in the hair?
Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice should be left on the hair for at least 8 hours or overnight. This ensures the lotion has enough time to kill all lice. Always follow the instructions provided in the patient leaflet or speak to a professional. For full usage guidance, check the product information page.
Can Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice be used preventatively?
Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice is designed as a treatment, not a preventative measure. It should only be used if an active infestation is confirmed. However, regular checks can help early detection.
Can I use Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice alongside other head lice treatments?
It’s generally not necessary or advisable to use multiple treatments at once. Stick to one course of Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice as directed. If it doesn’t work, speak with a pharmacist about next steps.
What is the success rate of Hedrin?
Clinical studies suggest Hedrin 4% Lotion can be effective in eliminating head lice in most cases when used as directed, with a repeat application after 7 days to target newly hatched lice. Effectiveness can vary depending on correct application and ensuring all household cases are treated simultaneously.
Can I use Hedrin 2 days in a row?
It’s not necessary to use Hedrin on consecutive days. The recommended regimen is one application, then a second application 7 days later to kill any lice that hatch after the first treatment. Using it more often does not improve results and may cause unnecessary skin irritation.

How it works
Hedrin 4% Lotion for Head Lice contains dimeticone, a silicone-based compound that works by physically coating head lice and their eggs. This coating blocks their ability to excrete water and breathe, effectively suffocating and killing them without the use of traditional insecticides. Because it works physically—not chemically—lice are less likely to develop resistance.

Ingredients
The active substance is Dimeticone 4% w/w. Dimeticone is not a chemical poison. It works by a physical process which effectively covers and drowns the louse.
The other ingredients are Cyclomethicone 5. Cyclomethicone 5 is a carrier ingredient which evaporates after application leaving the active ingredient to kill the lice.
